CBC Participant Information:
There is a specific methodology to the CBC and all participants MUST make arrangements IN ADVANCE with the Circle Compiler or sign up for each circle on Red Rock Audubon’s website.
Anyone can participate. If you are a beginning birder, no problem. You will join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. It’s important you let the compiler know your birding experience level. We will be counting all species and numbers that we can identify.
While
the routes vary slightly each year, some sites require frequent driving
and all require some walking. Some areas will have facilities such as
restrooms and water. Other sites may require more driving, or walking in
less developed terrain, and fewer nearby facilities. All are welcome to
join!
Each count takes place in an established 15-mile wide diameter circle, and is organized by a count compiler. Count volunteers follow specified routes through a designated 15-mile (24- km) diameter circle, counting every bird they see or hear in a 24 hour period. If observers live within a CBC circle, they may arrange in advance to count the birds at their feeders and submit those data to their compiler. While field observers count all day and record all birds seen and heard within the circle on count day, feeder watchers record the maximum number of each species tallied at one time. Volunteers need to prepared for a long day in the field. Some circles will include predawn counts of nocturnal birds.
Your compiler (MIchael Reeves - Dean_reeves@fws.gov) will provide you with:
a. Circle compiling meetup location and time.
b. Specific group route and CBC instructions for the day.
Volunteers
need to wear the appropriate clothing for the local weather conditions,
bring food and water. Binoculars and communication devices are
required. You need to be prepared for a full day in the field. At this
time, all of RRAS events will adhere to the current safety requirements
per the CDC, state and local directives. Please be respectful of
participants choices of wearing a mask and social distancing.
