In the second session of our nature journaling series, we will learn some tips and tricks to sketching birds-- no previous experience required! Drawing birds helps us become better observers and birders in the field. You will learn how to capture the general shape and structure of a bird in the field and how to supplement your sketch with notes on behavior, plumage, and more. We will focus primarily on sketching in pencil, and practice on some of the taxidermy birds in the classroom before moving outside to observe and sketch birds in the shade. After sketching, we will have a discussion on our observations and learn about some of the amazing adaptations of our urban and wetland birds.

The workshop will be mostly indoors, but make sure to bring water and sun protection. Journaling supplies will be provided, but you are free to bring your own. All are welcome-- whatever your skill level and interests!

Location: Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, 350 E Galleria Dr, Henderson, NV 89011. We will meet inside the classroom in the visitor center.

Note: Space is limited to 10 participants in order to have a good ratio of instructor to student.

Your Teacher: Morrigan DeVito has worked as an AmeriCorps service member for Red Rock Audubon since 2022 and has led birding events for all ages. She is also a writer and is the spring artist in residence at Clark County Wetlands Park. Prose, poetry, and nature journaling in colored pencil and ink are her preferred mediums, and her creative work focuses on how nature restores our attention and inspires inner and outer resilience, as well as the interconnectedness of all organisms.
