Winchester Dondero Cultural Center - Summer Day Camp and School Daze. Story and photos by Patty Dominguez.
Our center’s direct participation in Clark County Parks & Recreation’s School Daze program ended on Friday, March 26th. Since the beginning of the 2020 school year, Winchester Dondero Cultural Center has been one of the department’s support locations for CCSD’s online learning programs, serving 5 – 13 year-old students. Now that local schools are well on their way, transitioning back to full-time in-school classes, and many of our centers are transitioning to more open and public activities throughout Clark County, we are focusing again on serving the community at-large, supporting, presenting and representing arts and culture in Clark County.
One of the tools that we used to inspire and ignite curiosity in the youth who have been attending both the School Daze program and the Summer Day Camp program (that ran June – July 2020), was the Audubon 2018 Photography Awards exhibition, which was installed in our center in early June. A few of those who attended the Summer Day Camp, continued to participate with us during the School Daze program; including Scarlet, Luna and Marisol. Therefore, those three participants already knew exactly which photo reproductions they wanted the most, when offered the chance to take one home with them, as our exhibition came down (after gracing our walls for 10 months of children’s support programming).
Particularly during our summer program, we presented a full range of creative learning activities. As the students could not be taken on field trips, due to the pandemic’s restrictions, Get Outdoors Nevada and Red Rock Audubon partnered with Winchester Dondero to help bring the history, issues, wonder and beauty of our great outdoors to them, here at the center. The photo exhibition was a perfect backdrop to the curriculum and activities that we were able to present. And throughout the online learning of the 2020 school year, the colorful and vibrant photos created a penetrating and detailed context for their learning.
