Red Rock Audubon hosted members from Nevada's other two Audubon chapters from April 18th to April 20th. Lois and Mark Ports along with Ed Nickel came from Bristlecone Audubon Chapter in Elko. Bill Grossi from the Lahontan Audubon Society in Reno also made the trip to Las Vegas. Our first meet up was in Elko last spring. The three days were packed with activities from birding to enjoying presentations and, of course, just hanging out together. Thursday afternoon all attended a presentation at Nevada State College by Nathan Pieplow, author of two Peterson's Field Guides to Bird Sounds, arranged by Red Rock Audubon. In the evening many of our members mingled with our out of town guests at Astronomy Aleworks for our monthly Birds and Beer get together. On Friday our guests and eight members took a field trip to the China Date Ranch near Shoshone, CA, and birded with Len Warren. They were fortunate to see some amazing birds like Bell's Vireo and a White-throated Swift. They also sampled the Ranch's famous date shakes. Then everyone traveled on to Pahrump, NV, and birded at Discovery Park. There the group encountered a Red-shouldered Hawk, a Vermillion Flycatcher, a Peregrine Falcon and a Western Kingbird. Lunch was provided by Carol and Richard Cantino at their home on the park. Saturday morning our guests joined our regular bird walk at the Springs Preserve. Then they attended our chapter meeting where Nathan Pieplow was our presenter. Nathan spoke on The Amazing Sounds of Birds. In the evening the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve opened especially for us for a dusk bird walk and group dinner. Our next three club meet up is scheduled for spring 2020 with Lohontan Audubon. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Details to follow.
