The Living Desert Zoo | Gardens, JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa, and the Salton Sea. Lesser Goldfinch photos by Jim Nelson The Living Desert is 1804 acres, and they recommend at least 3 hours to cover in a visit. It is great for birding, with plenty of uncrowded room to observe and photograph birds. In a garden area, rarely visited, is the George E Kermode Fountain. I have spent time at the small fountain, and some days have seen only 3 - 4 other visitors in morning or afternoon. The fountain is a magnet for birds. The photos above and below are common visitors, and the surrounding area attracts many more birds. Costa's Hummingbird photo by Jim Nelson The JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa is about a 20 minute drive from the Living Desert, and parking is free as of this date. It covers many acres of golf course, including several ponds which can be safely accessed by pedestrians... Phainopepla and Northern Mockingbird photos by Jim Nelson In March, the breeding season for many birds will be in full swing in the Palm Desert area. Mid to late April begins the early summer hot season, and the Palm Desert area easily meets or surpasses Las Vegas' summer heat. The shorter drive from Las Vegas to Palm Desert is 183 miles going southwest through Kelso Junction. It is 295 miles following the I-15 south route. It takes 4 to 4 1/2 hours depending upon the route. Snowy Egret photo by Jim Nelson Yellow-Rumped Warblers photo by Jim Nelson American White Pelicans
